The islet where the suitors lie in wait for Telemachus — a place the poem describes precisely and the map has never produced.

Asteris sits between Ithaca and Same, has two harbours, and is where twenty suitors ambush Telemachus on his way home. The detail is operational: it names a place, a position and a facility.

The only candidate in the right strait is Daskalio, a rock with no harbours at all. Strabo already noticed the mismatch. Either the poem exaggerates, or the coastline has changed, or the geography is imagined.

Why this class

Speculative: one traditional candidate, contradicted by the poem's own description, with nothing excavated and no consensus. It scores 4/12 and is one of the clearest cases in the atlas of a precise description that fails to land.

What is disputed

Whether Asteris is a real islet mis-remembered, a place lost to seismic change — the Ionian is tectonically active — or a narrative convenience. Bittlestone's Paliki reconstruction relocates the whole ambush, which is one of its selling points and one of its costs.
